About Us

A Few Words

About our clinic

Founded in 1978 by Dr. John Knelson with a staff of one nurse and one receptionist, we have grown into a large team of professionals to care for your children. Today Carteret Children’s Clinic has three Physicians, three Nurse Practitioners, and an integrated Behavioral Health team led by a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. We are dedicated to bringing the best possible pediatric care to the children of Carteret County, as well as hundreds of visitors each year, with a true “spirit of caring.”

Our Mission

"Carteret Children’s Clinic is a Christian ministry. We are dedicated to the proposition that the best quality medical care can and should be delivered in a friendly, pleasant environment with a true “spirit of caring.” We believe this is possible only by seeking to care for all the aspects of disease in our patients, without regard for their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap, or monetary status, treating them all as God’s children. Furthermore, we believe that Jesus Christ is the author of all healing. We have a stewardship responsibility to use the gifts He has given us to participate with Him in the healing of body, soul, and mind.

To accommodate these beliefs, the Carteret Children’s Clinic has intentionally chosen the path of a service-oriented business. For instance, the hours of operation are designed to serve the needs of our patients, sometimes at an inconvenience to the staff. Pediatric care is always available, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to provide medical advice. We never refuse to see a sick patient, and follow-up on patients is an accepted responsibility to ensure proper and complete medical treatment. Patients and their families or other caregivers are always to be treated with respect, understanding, and compassion. We attempt to encourage compliance with a patient’s treatment plan through a comprehensive program of education for healthy living."

The mission today has changed little from these words written long ago. We continue to strive to do more for our patients by keeping longer hours, adding more providers, and still not forgetting that each child is special and deserves the utmost care we can provide. We are always open to hearing what our patients need as we move forward into the future.
